If you are tired of glasses or contact lenses, laser vision correction is likely on your mind. The names alone — LASIK, Femto LASIK, PRK, SMILE — can be confusing, and clinics often promote one over another. In reality they are different routes to the same goal: reshaping the cornea so light focuses correctly on the retina. Which one suits you is decided by your eyes, not by marketing.
Refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing precisely on the retina. Myopia makes distance blurry, hyperopia affects near vision, and astigmatism distorts vision at all distances. Laser correction reshapes the cornea so that focus lands where it should.
LASIK creates a thin corneal flap, applies an excimer laser to reshape the tissue underneath, then repositions the flap.
Femto LASIK follows the same principle but uses a femtosecond laser rather than a blade to create that flap.
PRK works on the surface of the cornea without creating a flap. It is sometimes preferred for particular corneal profiles, and its recovery pattern differs from LASIK.
SMILE reshapes the cornea through a small incision without creating a large flap. Suitability depends on the type and degree of refractive error.
Before any procedure, a detailed assessment is carried out: corneal thickness, corneal topography to map the surface, pupil measurements, tear film assessment and a general eye health check. Stability of your spectacle power over time also matters.
These findings are what determine candidacy. Someone with thinner corneas or an irregular corneal surface may be advised towards one technique over another — or advised that laser correction is not appropriate at all. That is a sign of careful assessment, not a setback.
Recovery patterns differ between techniques, and your surgeon will explain what to expect for the approach chosen. Follow-up visits are used to monitor healing and check that vision is stabilising.
No procedure can guarantee a specific visual result, and some people still need glasses for certain tasks afterwards. A good consultation will set expectations honestly rather than promise an outcome.
